Foundations of Sculpture

In this lesson, students learn some of the elements intrinsic to an understanding of sculpture (line, shape, balance, form, texture and space) as well as the different techniques used to make sculpture, particularly as this pertains to the works by John Henry. This lesson allows students to discuss and examine the aesthetics of sculpture as well as understand the qualities of a successful sculpture. By mimicking the work of Henry students gain an understanding of more modernist, minimalist sculpture as they work together to create a sculpture using only lines and planes.

Geometric Shapes and Forms

This lesson introduces students to the concept that 2 dimensional shapes, which they see and draw every day, have a 3 dimensional form counterpart. Students’ minds are opened to the sculptural possibilities of 2d designs and they gain a better understanding of the design process that inspires John Henry’s sculpture. Older students also gain a rudimentary understanding of how to use drawing tools for design purposes.
